I was recently in the middle of a big project and forgot how fast my internet was. We’re back up and running now and I’m having a blast with the new build. I can’t wait to get my hands dirty with the plumbing.
So, you can imagine the excitement I was feeling while I was typing this up.
There’s no better feeling than to see a site load slowly, then slowly start loading, then slowly load, then slowly load, then slowly load… as I was typing this up.
That’s how slow it is. The good news is, the more sites you load in a short amount of time, the better your internet speeds will be. The bad news is, that means if you’re using a lot of sites, your internet speed might drop a little. The good news is, while the internet is going to be slow, that doesn’t always mean that it’s going to be bad.
Internet speed is affected by a few things; the amount of data moving through your modem, your connection speed, and the type of service your modem is providing. I think the most important thing we can do as a designer is to ensure that our internet connections are as fast as possible. If you can’t, then don’t build the site.
The second most important thing is to make sure your modem is the best it can be. While there are some good deals out there for cheap modems, you will not get the best internet speeds out of them. The best modems are built to handle an unusually high amount of data. If your modem cannot handle the load, then your internet connection will speed up. But, it needs to be the highest quality possible.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a modem that was very slow, but this one is pretty low-latency. You’ll notice that there is no jitter because the modem is so fast that it can handle the load of the connection. Also, the modem is extremely cheap – the price is $9.95, and there is a second modem that costs $49.95.
Low-latency is important because latency is a factor in how fast your modem can handle the data. But speed is the ultimate quality factor. So if your modem can handle the load from your internet connection, but is too slow, then your internet connection will take a bit longer to load and load a bit more slowly.
In our test, we could get a connection with average-latency of around 1.8 seconds, but a connection that had a latency of 1.8 seconds could still be a bit laggy. Low latency, we found, is important because latency is a factor in how fast your modem can handle the data. We’re also impressed with the quality of the connection. The connection is fast, and it’s very reliable. We’re confident that we’ll be hitting the 1.
That’s a bit of a general-lesson here. Low latency is important when you have a lot of users and/or a lot of data to send. However, it’s also important to note that latency does not mean a connection is very slow. It can be very slow, yes, but with proper planning, you can have a very fast connection.
