They are in fact obliged to keep the power of the internet in their own hands.
ISPs are in a bit of a gray area because they are not required to adhere to any rules regarding the internet. They are permitted to own their own data and can do whatever they want with it. Additionally, they are allowed to charge for data usage. A lot of ISPs have been accused of using their own bandwidth to charge for more data, so it’s not hard to figure out why they might be using their own data to sell to other people.

In a nutshell, I was talking to someone at the Federal Trade Commission recently about the fact that ISPs would be allowed to charge for data usage. I was thinking of two types of data usage: You’re allowed to download the whole of the internet for a buck and you can even use your own data (or “carrier’s” data) to sell goods and services. It’s not hard to figure out why people might be using their own data to make money.

The problem is that these are all things you can do without any personal data, so you really shouldn’t be paying for them.
